NEXT GEN 2019-2020 - A few highlights:
Please note, this is not a riding lesson programme. There may be an opportunity for some riding but this is not the focus or the priority.

WHO ARE WE? Next Gen is for 12-18 year olds, but due to high interest we are also now taking a small intake of Junior Next Gen (8-11 year olds).

Next Gen trainers are dedicated and passionate and like to have fun. They want to become better animal trainers, growing their skills to communicate clearly and positively motivate their horses and other pets. Next Gen trainers want the animals to enjoy their interactions as much as they do.
Note: You do not need to have a horse - many of our Next Gen trainers don't have their own horses. Horse time is with the Positively Together herd, and we will also experience training other species such as dogs, chickens, sheep and more.

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? This is a unique opportunity for you to spend regular quality time with the Positively Together team (human and four-legged), and to grow your human "herd", connecting with like-minded friends. The emphasis of NextGen is on kindness, empathy and respect for our animals and for each other. This is a safe and nurturing environment to learn and grow and challenge ourselves.

Horse-based activities focus on learning how to set the horses up for success so they are happy and cooperative, without the use of traditional training tools such as escalating pressure and punishment. We also learn about training dogs, sheep, chickens and other animals - seeing with our own eyes how we can inspire behaviour change in positive ways no matter the species.
Meanwhile, trainers learn important keys to building positive relationships, communication and trust with others (whether 4-legged or two!).

Throughout all sessions we keep a strong focus on those important life skills that run in close parallel to our positive horsemanship - consent, compassion, trust, kindness to self and others, developing resilience and self-confidence, and open honest communication.

The focus of the Next Gen curriculum is on self-development and building resilience. We know that teenage life is hard work! Dealing with anxiety, depression and mental health challenges is something we all face - whether it impacts ourselves, our family or our friends. We want to empower Next Gen Trainers to be kind and compassionate, with themselves and with others around them, and to equip them with tools to live their best life.
“In a gentle way, you can shake the world”
    -Mahatma Gandhi

    Bold - Brave - Connected - Compassionate
    Parents say:
"She comes home a better person... she says she loves it because there's no digital devices, just lots of fun with good friends outdoors, learning and playing with horses"
"She gets so much out of these days. She is so enjoying what you are teaching and what she is learning during her time with you. She really comes away feeling on top of the world having achieved results with the ponies. It’s opening her eyes!"

    FAQ's:
Do you have to have your own horse?
No, Next Gen is inclusive of all, whether you have a horse or not. The skills you learn are relevant to other pets as well as in life in general.

    What exactly is included?
    The plan for 2021:
    Monthly events, including
    - full-day sessions working with the Positively Together herd and other animals at Bex's place
    - afternoon/evening sessions for goal setting, careers coaching, managing stress, theory/discussions around horse and animal care and training, etc;
    - social get-together at end of year
    - TWO camps (one summer camp in January and one Equifest Experience or equivalent usually occurring in October/November)

Consistent attendance is strongly encouraged so that friendships and knowledge/skills can be built upon.

What is the schedule for 2021?
We are now holding events on the third Saturday of EACH month! More learning, more laughs, more NextGen.
    Dates for the first half:
    15-17 Jan (Camp)
    Sat 20 Feb
    Sat 20 Mar
    Sat 17 Apr
    Sat 15 May
    Sat 19 Jun

    Where will activities take place?
Most of the events will be at Positively Together home base, in Wright Road, Aongatete. Alternative venues will be publicised ahead of time and we can discuss re transport.

Can I bring my own horse or dog or other animal?
We work with the Positively Together team of animals, so please don't bring your own. This is for the safety, enjoyment and welfare of animals and humans. There may be occasional opportunities for Next Genners to bring an animal along, however this will be invite-only for specific purposes.

What age group is this suited for?
The Next Gen programme has traditionally been for 12-18 year olds, however in 2020 we introduced a new Next Gen Junior Trainers league this year, for a small number of 8-11 year olds. This has gone very well and we look forward to welcome more juniors in 2021. (There are leadership / mentorship opportunities for those older than 18, please enquire).

    What is the cost?
Each event is $60. There are family discounts available (save $10 on each when booking siblings).

RSVP and payment for each event is required in the first week of the month (or earlier).

Refunds will be given if the event is cancelled due to facilitator illness, or Covid alert levels. We proceed in all weather, however if necessary we will postpone the event rather than cancel so any fees paid transfer to the new date. All efforts will be made to alert families as early as possible to any changes.
